About the village

Putoujiao village (埔头角村) is an administrative village in the north-east of Huangjin town (黄金镇), Fengshun county (丰顺县), Meizhou, in north-east Guangdong. It holds twelve hamlet groups across about six square kilometres, with 220 registered households and roughly 1,200 people, and 342.8 mu of cultivated land. To the north lie Pudong (埔东村), Huangdong (隍洞村) and Dongkeng (东坑村); to the south and east the land runs into Liuhuang town (留隍镇). The name is explained in the provincial place-name record as coming from the putou bamboo (埔竹) that grew along the Chanxi stream (产溪), the village standing on a corner of the flood plain below it. The village's entrance plaque dates its founding to the late Qing, when families moving south settled here. Its modern administrative shape is recent: a production brigade of the Huangjin commune from 1958, and a management district of the town from 1987. The county was created in 1738 from territory taken from its neighbours, and this edge of it has long been a meeting place. Fengshun is roughly five-sixths Hakka-speaking, while Teochew is the speech of Liuhuang town next door and of parts of Huangjin. Farming is still the base. Putoujiao was listed in 2019 among Guangdong's democracy and rule-of-law demonstration villages. Fish farming has become a local focus: in 2026 a support team working with the town released 60,000 fry into the village ponds. The town around it is bamboo country, with about 100,000 mu of bamboo stands, and the rafting stretch of the Longjing river (龙鲸河) runs through the neighbouring Qingxi valley.
