Lin Ma Hang

About the village

Lin Ma Hang (蓮麻坑) is a historic Hakka village in the Sha Tau Kok area of Hong Kong’s New Territories, near the Shenzhen border and Robin’s Nest Country Park. With more than 300 years of history, it is associated with several long-established clans and retains a distinctive rural character shaped by village houses, ancestral halls, temples, historic bridges, and the declared-monument Residence of Ip Ting-sz. The village is also known for its mining and natural heritage. Lin Ma Hang Lead Mine was once among Hong Kong’s largest mining systems; after it was abandoned, its caves became an important bat habitat and were designated a Site of Special Scientific Interest. The surrounding landscape and stream add to the area’s ecological value, making Lin Ma Hang a distinctive meeting point of heritage, nature, and borderland history.
